Virginia Viola Linn's Obituary
Virginia Viola Linn, 91, of Martinsville, Illinois, passed away at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at Heartland Manor Nursing Center, in Casey, Illinois. Virginia was born on January 23, 1918, in Evansville, Indiana, the daughter of Elza Linn and Ruth Husted Linn. Virginia is survived by her nephews, James H. Linn, Jr., of Poinciana, FL; Richard M. Linn, of Interlaken, NY; David W. Linn of Trumansburg, NY; and Robert J. Linn, of Averill Park, NY; three great nieces and four great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James H. Linn, and her sister in law, Jean Munch Linn. Virginia was an Associate Professor Emerita of Music at East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina. She was a 1935 graduate of Martinsville, High School; in 1940, she earned an undergraduate degree in education from Illinois State Normal University; and, from the University of Iowa, in 1947, she received a Master of Arts in Piano and, in 1961 a Master of Fine Arts (Voice). Since her retirement, Virginia was active in the choir of Martinsville United Methodist Church (as a member, pianist and, most recently, director) and also active in the Masterworks Chorale at Indiana State University. A memorial service will be held at the Martinsville United Methodist Church, 115 North Washington St., Martinsville, on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. (Illinois time), with Pastor John N. Gartelos officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at the church. Memorial donations and contributions may be made to the Martinsville United Methodist Church, 115 North Washington St., Martinsville, IL 62442.
