Tony Merz's Obituary
Giovanni Edmond Anthony "Tony" Merz, age 87, of Casey, died on Thursday, December 22, 2005 at Heartland Manor Nursing Home in Casey. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Casey with Father Chris Brey officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church and burial will be in the Washington Street Cemetery. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by the Casey VFW and the Hazel Dell American Legion. Markwell & Son Funeral Home in Casey assisted the family with the arrangements. He was born October 19, 1918 in Red Bud, IL, the son of Robert L and Emma Rau Merz. He married Betty Jane Underwood on November 14, 1981 in Greenup; she preceded him in death on June 22, 2005. He served in the Naval Construction Battalion for three years in the Pacific area during WWII. In 1948, he moved to Greenup and started his business, Merz Sheet Metal, in Casey. He was a member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and the Casey VFW Post 5762. Surviving are several nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law, John Underwood, of Belton SC. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, seven brothers and one sister. Memorials may be made to the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Casey.
