Robert "Bob" R. Simmons, 77, of Westfield, Illinois passed away at 3:50 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Casey Health Care Center in Casey, Illinois. He was born December 18, 1931 in Westfield, Illinois, the son of Wendell Simmons and Grace Luther Simmons. On February 10, 1951 he married Shirley Merrick in Westfield, Illinois. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Simmons of Westfield, Illinois; daughter, Debbie Simmons of Mattoon, Illinois; daughter, Sherry Robison and husband Rob of Westfield, Illinois; daughter Donna Shull and husband Brent of Casey, Illinois; daughter, Kathy Simmons of Charleston, Illinois; daughter, Karen Lowry and husband Sean of Champaign, Illinois; son, Robert A. Simmons of Westfield, Illinois; brother, William Simmons and wife Jeannie of Bourne, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Michelle Carlen and husband Bill of Casey, Illinois; Ryan Robison and wife Jenny of Worden, Illinois; Melody Shull of Effingham, Illinois; Angie McElravy and husband Greg of Jewett, Illinois; Eric Shull and wife Jessica of Casey, Illinois; Kyle Lowry of Champaign, Illinois; Jason Lowry of Champaign, Illinois; Robert "Mitch" Simmons of Casey, Illinois; great grandchildren Baylee Scott, Brayden Carlen, Bryce Robison, Allison McElravy, Garrett McElravy and Emma Shull. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald Simmons; sister, Marian Bona and grandson, Robert Shane Lowry. Bob served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1952-1956. He was a rural carrier for the United States Postal Service in Westfield for 28 years. He also worked as a handyman and carpenter his entire life and worked as a Marathon Oil distributor for 3 years. He was very proud to serve as a baseball and softball umpire for 18 years and is a member of the Illinois State and Casey Softball Hall of Fame. He served on the school board in Westfield, IL for six years and was a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Westfield Baptist Church, and he lived his entire life in Westfield, Illinois. Funeral services will be held at the Westfield Baptist Church on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Jim Butler and Rev. Charles Shelquist officiating. Burial will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites by the Westfield and Kansas American Legions. Visitation will be Friday evening from 4-7 p.m. at the church with Masonic Services at 7 p.m. by the Westfield Masonic Lodge.
