Robert Jackson "Bob" Gates' Obituary
Robert Jackson "Bob" Gates, 78, of Martinsville, IL passed away at 10:51 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN. He was born on October 17, 1934 in Buck Township, Edgar County, IL, the son of Ralph Jackson Gates and Reba Kathern Van Houten. On June 25, 1955 in Marshall, IL, he married Anna Mae Wilkey. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Anna Gates of Martinsville, IL; daughters, Bonnie Foppe and husband Larry of Trenton, IL and Leva Cheryl Utley and husband Henry of Newton, IL; brothers, Larry Gates and wife Judy of Tangier, IN and Ralph Gates and friend Twyla Sager of Danville, IL; sister, Shirley Craig and husband Kenny of Casey, IL; grandchildren, Anthony "Tony" Alwardt and wife Randi Kay, Piers Neal and fiance Brittany Goss, and Justin Neal; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Don Gates; and sister, Leona Williams. Mr. Gates was a 1954 graduate of Martinsville High School and member of the Martinsville First Baptist Church since 1953. Bob worked at Shell Gas Station in Martinsville prior to owning Gates Sunoco in Martinsville from 1971 thru 1989. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, 5 Trotter Lane, Martinsville, IL with Rev. Gene Southard and Bro. Art Orndorff officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville, IL. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Greenwell Funeral Home, 30 N. Washington St., Martinsville, IL.
