Richard Underwood's Obituary
Richard H. (Dick) Underwood, 89, of Casey, Illinois went to be with Our Lord at 1:55 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2009, after a short illness. He was born in Panola, Illinois to Harlan F. and Minnie M. Brown Underwood on October 5, 1920. He graduated from Lexington High in 1939 with a Baseball Scholarship. He then entered the Army and served in WW II from 1942-1947 with the 866th Aviation Engineers. Mr. Underwood previously lived in Lexington, Illinois and Chatsworth, Illinois before moving to Casey, Illinois in 1970 where he made his home. He owned Underwood Construction from 1955-1978. He is known for building 20 churches and several Medical Centers in the surrounding area. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Casey, Illinois and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 5762, Casey, Illinois. He was a former member of the Elks and American Legion. Mr. Underwood received The Casey Citizen of the Year Award in 2002, and is known for organizing the Avenue of Flags in Casey, Illinois. He was an avid golfer and loved fishing. Mr. Underwood is survived by his two Daughters, Dorothy Darlene Burgess Ingersoll of Fairbury, Illinois and Shirley Kay Underwood of Floresville, Texas; sisters, Kathryn Metz of Fairbury, Illinois, Hazel Miller of Charlotte, NC and Shirley Wagner of El Paso, Illinois; brother, Lewis Underwood of East Peoria, Illinois; Special Friend, Gwen Schmidt of Casey, Illinois; 6 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, 2 sisters, and 1 grandson. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Markwell Funeral Home in Casey, Illinois with Rev. Tom Marsh officiating. Military Rites will follow the services by the Casey VFW and Hazel Dell American Legion. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Graveside committal services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at the Graceland Cemetery in Fairbury, Illinois.
