Richard Lowell Shanks, age 71, of Martinsville, IL passed away at 2:22 a.m. at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He was born April 19, 1953 in Terre Haute, IN, the son of Lowell Eugene Shanks and Marie (Johnson) Shanks.
He is survived by his sister, Catherine Gilbert (Billy) of Lewis, IN; nieces, Stacey Guthrie of Clinton, IN and Mindy Roberts (Ricky) of Martinsville, IL; great nephew, Dalton Roberts, and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Richard was a 1971 graduate of Martinsville High School and attended Lake Land College. He managed and consulted with Dairy Farms, Row Crop Farms and over-seas farm machinery sales in other countries for many years. Richard was well traveled; spending time in Afghanistan, Africa, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Moldova, Netherlands, Russia, Scotland, Siberia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and throughout the United States. He especially enjoyed his time in Europe.
To know Richard was to appreciate him for his dry sense of humor and his unothordoxed approach to life. Although he would be the first to step up to lend a helping hand; he would not expect praise or notoriety for his help. An important part of Richard 's life was attending visitations and funeral services for friends, family and acquaintances. He would always re-arrange his schedule to allow time to pay his respects.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at Olive Branch Cemetery, rural Martinsville, IL with Rev. Kevin Gilbert officiating.
