Noah Matthews' Obituary
Noah J. Matthews, age 94, of Mattoon, formerly of Charleston, died on Friday, September 16, 2005 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home in Charleston with Pastor Bob Schlesselman officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m on Monday, September 19, 2005 at the funeral home and burial will be in the Van Voorhis Cemetery in rural Hindsboro. He was born July 12, 1911 in Arcola, the son of James W. and Sarah Ruth Woodyard Matthews. He married Cleo Marie Addis; she preceded him in death on December 6, 1981. He farmed for several years and was a custodian for Community Unit #1 for 25 years and also drove a bus. He was a member and former deacon of the Bushton Christian Church. At 90, he placed second in the state horseshoe tournament in the 70 age bracket. He was also an avid bowler. He especially treasured the time he was able to spend with his family and rooting for the Chicago Cubs. Surviving are two daughters, Linda Rogers of Mattoon and Joyce Richardson and husband Ed of Casey, three sons, Nick Matthews of Lerna, Dennis Matthews and wife Kathy of Casey and Lonnie Matthews of Charleston, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter and two brothers. Memorials may be made to Lincoln Land Hospice or the Bushton Christian Church.
