Marilyn Jean Hutson's Obituary
Marilyn Jean Hutson (Grandma Jean), 80, of Westfield, Illinois slipped away late in the evening on Mother's Day, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and loved ones. Jean was born June 10, 1928 in Cumberland County, Illinois, the daughter of Herman Taylor Reed and Audrey Marie Comer Reed of Dogtown (Diona, IL), who preceded her in death, along with her only brother Rev. Maurice Reed of Robinson. After her children were in school (1964), Jean used her degree from Eastern Illinois University to begin her teaching career in the Westfield School District and later the Consolidated Casey-Westfield School System. At the age of 57, Jean was the 29th heart transplant recipient at Barnes Jewish Hospital. After recovering from her heart transplant on May 1, 1986, she returned to teaching in Casey in August of the same year, where she taught business and history until her retirement in 1994. Jean was a member of the Westfield United Methodist Church, Clark County Home Extension, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Heart Transplant Association of St. Louis, as well as the Westfield Teacher's Lunch Bunch. Grandma Jean, or Grammy Jean, as she was known by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, spent many evenings and weekends entertaining and playing games. She was the host of many eventful New Year's Eve celebrations and sleepovers and was always available to read and tell stories. Her noodles, tuna cakes, cinnamon toast and scroodles were favorites with this group. Jean is survived by her 5 children, Ronald Hugh Hutson (Debbie) of Bloomington, Indiana; Karen Jean Hutson Pine (Richard) of Martinsville; Gail Ann Hutson of Chicago; Randy Lee Hutson (Cindy) of Vernon Hills ; and Timothy Alan Hutson (Cindy) of Casey. She loved her 12 grandchildren: Jennifer, Jill (Valdez), Jeffrey and Julia Redman, Lisa (Price) and Blake Heltsley, Nikki, Katie, Kristina, Kendall, Russell and Grace Hutson, and the sunshine of her life, 3 great grandchildren; Isabella Valdez and Allison and Ella Price. Jean is also survived by her spirited lap cat, Foxey, who lived with her since 1998. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at the Westfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Shelquist officiating. Burial will follow in the Hurricane Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the Church.
