Loren P Smith's Obituary
Loren P. Smith, 84, passed away Saturday afternoon, May 8, 2010, at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, IL. Loren had been a resident of the Casey Health Care Center in Casey, IL since September of last year. Loren was born on March 11, 1926, in Casey, IL to Clarence O. and Dott (McFarland) Smith. He attended Casey High School and married Lela M. Chapman on November 15, 1947. Loren is survived by his granddaughter, Erin Diamond and son-in-law, Ron Diamond of Fishers, IN; brother, Larry Smith of Casey, IL; and sister, Kay Lingerfelt of Kissimmee, FL along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lela; daughter, Judy S. Diamond of Fishers, IN; brother, Duane J. Smith of Casey; and sister, Lois H. Smitley of Marshall, IL. His brother, Denver Smith of Dallas, TX, succeeded him in death on May 9, 2010. Loren was a World War II veteran, proudly serving in the U.S. Army and receiving the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He worked at various farming-related jobs for a number of years before joining the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841 of Terre Haute in 1967. He retired as an Operating Engineer in 1993. Loren was a member of the Hazel Dell Church of God, where he had been a member for many years. Visitation will be at Markwell & Sons Funeral Home in Casey from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Funeral services are scheduled the following morning, Thursday, May 13 at 10:00 a.m., also at the funeral home, with Rev. Richard Emrich officiating. Following services there, Loren will be transported to the Hazel Dell Church of God Cemetery for a brief military service before burial.
