Lela M Smith's Obituary
Lela M. Smith, 80, passed away Sunday morning, December 13, at the Casey Health Care Center in Casey, IL. Lela had been a resident of the nursing home since September of this year. Lela was born on August 4, 1929, in Greenup, IL to Ray and Pauline Chapman. She graduated from Casey High School in 1947 and later that year married Loren P. Smith on November 15, 1947. Lela is survived by her husband Loren, sister Ellen Stevens of Bremerton, WA, brother Charles Chapman of Greenup, IL, son-in-law Ron Diamond and granddaughter Erin Diamond of Fishers, IN, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judy S. Diamond of Fishers, IN and brother Norval Chapman of Charleston, IL. Lela was active in her community, volunteering for many years as the treasurer for the Hazel Dell Church of God, where she had been a member all her life. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years at Hutton's Parts Service where she retired a number of years ago. Lela was also a member of the Casey Women's Club and had been a breast cancer survivor for over 34 years. Visitation will be at Markwell & Sons Funeral Home in Casey from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16. Funeral services are scheduled the following morning, Thursday, December 17 at 10:00 a.m., also at the funeral home with Richard Emrich officiating. Following services there, Lela will be transported to the Hazel Dell Church of God Cemetery for a brief service before burial. Contributions in Lela's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Memorial tributes may be sent to the family at www.markwellfuneralhome.com.
