Lee S. Greenwell, age 97, of Martinsville, IL passed away on Monday, August 17, 2015 in the Burnsides Community Health Care in Marshall, Illinois. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the Martinsville Bible Church, 509 E. Ridgelawn Road, Martinsville, Illinois with Pastor David Wilson and Brother Billie Ray Ulrey officiating. The visitation will be Friday from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Greenwell Funeral Home, 30 N. Washington St., Martinsville, IL. Burial will be in the Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville, Illinois. Lee was born on September 27, 1917 in Union Township, Cumberland County, Illinois the son of Frank and Josie (Lee) Greenwell. He married Joy K. Clough on January 24, 1940 in St. Louis, Missouri. She passed away on August 5, 2008 He is survived by one daughter, Patty Buckner and her husband Eddie of Martinsville, IL; one son, George Greenwell and his wife Rebecca of Martinsville, IL; grandchildren, Becky (Shane) McDearmon of Martinsville, IL; Tim (Nicole)Buckner of Annapolis, IL; Alan Buckner of Martinsville, IL; Jill (Rusty) Goodman of Martinsville, IL and Tony (Jackie) Goodwin of Martinsville, IL; great grandchildren, Clayton Buckner, Miriam Buckner, Addison McDearmon, Tru Goodman and Parker Goodman; step great grandchildren, Austin Davison, Alex McDearmon and Nikki Dean. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, George Greenwell; sisters, Carmen Greenwell and Katherine McCarthy and an infant sibling. Lee graduated from high school and mortuary school in Los Angeles, California. He moved back to Casey and began working for the Swinford Funeral Home. In 1938 he opened the Greenwell Funeral Home on Main Street in Martinsville, IL. Lee was a US Navy WWII Veteran. In 1943 after his military service, Lee and Joy purchased the property at the current location and moved the Greenwell Funeral Home. He continued to operate the funeral home until his retirement in 1980 although he continued to assist his son George with the funeral business until 2008. As a fully licensed funeral director Lee was the oldest member of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association. Lee was a member of the Martinsville American Legion Post 515, the Martinsville Masonic Lodge 603 and the Casey VFW Post 5762. He attended the Martinsville Bible Church. Lee stayed extremely active in church and community events in Martinsville. He assisted with installing the lights at the football field, the welcome sign to Martinsville and building the Martinsville Community Center.
