Kenneth Carson Cutler's Obituary
Kenneth Carson (K.C.) "Pat" Cutler, 88, of Clermont, FL formerly of Casey, IL passed away on Friday, June 14, 2013 at his home in FL after a long battle with cancer. He was born May 13, 1925 in Ashmore, IL the son of Ralph and Beatrice I. Wilson Cutler. He married Peggy Ann Moody; she passed away in 1964 at the age of 38 of kidney disease. Pat is survived by his wife of thirty four years, Carol Osterling Cutler of Clermont FL; they were married May 11, 1979. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Greg Lee of Casey, IL; daughter-in-law, Susan Cutler of Casey, IL; sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Herman Gardner of Casey, IL; nephew, Larry and wife Carolyn Gardner of Casey, IL and niece, Linda and husband Dale Melton of Casey, IL and step-daughter, Carol Popson of Orlando, FL. He is also survived by his step-sons with whom he shared a close relationship, Johnny Osterling, Dennis Osterling and wife Lynn; DeWayne Osterling and wife Pat and Kirk Osterling and wife Patty, all of Wisconsin. Surviving grandchildren include Scott Lee and wife Christy of Elgin, IL; Jason Lee and wife Julianne of Savoy, IL; Molly Cutler, Laura Cutler, Michael Cutler and Kenneth Cutler; step grandchildren, Cindy Blohm and husband Adam, Nicole Osterling, Annette Allen and husband Wayne and David Osterling, all of Wisconsin. Pat is also survived by fifteen great grandchildren and step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Peggy Moody Cutler; son, Steven Dwight Cutler and his second wife, Shirley Blanchard. Pat enlisted in the United States Marine Corp following high school. He was trained as a rifle sharpshooter and qualified as a rifle NCO. He fought in some of the fiercest battles of World War II. He sustained an injury to his left arm which left him unable to straighten his arm. When deemed able to return, he led his squad into battle on Iwo Jima. While trying to help a friend who was mortally wounded, SGT Cutler was severely burned over most of his body due to the explosion of a white phosphorus mortar shell. He spent almost two years in the hospital in Hawaii and Great Lakes Naval Hospital, first fighting for his life and then on a long road to recovery. He received a Purple Heart for his valor and injuries in combat. His story has been told by World War II war correspondent, Keith Wheeler, in his book "We Are the Wounded." A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Casey Cumberland Cemetery with Rev. Dan Smith officiating.
