James Everett Shonk's Obituary
James Everett "Jim" Shonk, 83, of Casey, IL passed away at 6:55 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County, IL. He was born February 26, 1928, in Grandview Township, IL, the son of Everett Lonzo Shonk and Vina Rachel Staggs Shonk. On March 2, 1949, he married Betty Mae Williams in Casey, IL. She passed away on January 23, 1984. Survivors include daughter, Marcy Shonk of Casey, IL; son, Doug Shonk and wife Marsha of Casey, IL; grandchildren, James Kuhn and wife Megan of Charleston, IL; Amy McGrath and husband Greg of Casey, IL; Carly Shonk of Mattoon, IL; Kaleb Shonk of Casey, IL and Cris Shonk and wife, Darby of Greenup IL; great grandchildren, Wade Seaton, Macy McGrath and Dylan McGrath; brother, Bob Shonk and wife Marilyn of Kansas, IL and sister, Marilyn Sager and husband Don of Charleston, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett & Vina Shonk; stepfather, Russell Burger; wife, Betty Shonk; brothers, Hughes, Raymond and Morris Shonk and sister, Alice Perry. Jim was retired as Manager of the Casey Stone Quarry and Vulcan Materials of Casey, IL. He was a member of the Casey VFW and International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy, Naval Reserves and U.S. Air Force. He was affectionately known to his family and friends as Jim, Pop, Daddy and Sarge. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 21, 2011 at the Markwell Funeral Home, Casey, IL with the Rev. Dr. Penelope Barber officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Street Cemetery, Casey, IL with graveside military rites by the Casey VFW and the Hazel Dell American Legion. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial donations and contributions may be made to the Casey VFW, 300 S.
