Herschel W Gardner's Obituary
Herschel William Gardner, 93, of Casey, Illinois passed away at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the Cumberland Health Care Center, Greenup, Illinois, where he had been a resident since January 2007. He was born on May 2, 1915 in Cumberland County, Illinois, the son of Otto Gardner and Dessie Cooper Gardner. On March 17, 1934 he married Mildred Aleen Applegate in Cumberland County, Illinois. She passed away on December 8, 1999. Survivors include daughter, Shirley Burnett and husband Clark of Casey, IL; daughter, Sharon Hutton and husband Ted of Brookfield, WI; son, Frederick Gardner of Casey, IL; brother, Herman Wayne Gardner and wife Wilma of Casey, IL; six grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. His parents, wife, Aleen Gardner; sisters, Helen M. Wilson McKelfresh in 1996 and Wanda Irene Gardner in 1931 and an infant son preceded him in death. Herschel was a retired after fifty years of farming northwest of Casey, IL; having returned to the farm from the oilfields in southern Illinois. He was a Deacon, Trustee and sixty year Member of the Macedonia Baptist Church. He also held positions with the Westfield Southern Baptist Association. He was a noted song leader; he brought many hymns to life. He was a former Director of the Farm Bureau and serviced on the Board of Directors for Coles Moultrie in Mattoon, IL. He and his wife attended the Casey Senior Citizen's Center where they played in the Kazoo Band. One thing he and his wife most enjoyed was attending athletic events at the local high school. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Markwell Funeral Home, Casey, Illinois with Rev. Marvin Oakley officiating. Burial will be in the Hazel Dell Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home.
