Gordon Eugene "Gene" Mathews' Obituary
Gordon Eugene "Gene" Mathews, age 85, of Casey, IL peacefully passed away at 11:08 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at Gibson Family Center, Terre Haute, IN surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 26, 1939 in Hidalgo, IL, the son of Gordon Earl Mathews and Vicie Irene (Cisney) Mathews. On October 25, 1974 he married Susan K. Whitton in Casey, IL.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Susan "Susie" Mathews of Casey, IL; children, Rodney Mathews (Melanie) of Casey, IL, Jackie Weaver (Tom) of Casey, IL and Dustin Mathews (Nichole) of Saint Charles, MO; grandchildren, Nikki Heltsley (Darryn Buckler) of Kansas, IL, Trae Nash (Shelby) of Casey, IL, Tara Redman (Josh) of Robinson, IL, Brittany Miller (David) of Oblong, IL, Whitney Cruse (Andy) of Marshall, IL and Jack Mathews of Saint Charles, MO; great grandchildren, Addison and Ellie Heltsley, Ashtyn and Broxtyn Nash, Madisyn and Nash Redman, Cade, Coda, and Mia Miller and Vivian and Henry Cruse; brother-in-law, Walter "Wally" Whitton (Chris) of Casey, IL; and nephews, Justin and Spencer Whitton. He was preceded in death by his infant sister, Shirley Irene Mathews, parents, brother-in-law, Chris Whitton and sister-in-law, Lynne Ross.
Gene was a 1957 graduate of Newton High School. He was a lifelong local businessman and retired from the shipping department at Casey Tool & Machine. Gene was also a station engineer for Illinois Central Railroad for several years. He was a member of the Casey First Christian Church and attended the Casey Methodist Church. Gene enjoyed serving the community and was past president of the Casey Chamber of Commerce and a Casey Country Club member where he enjoyed playing many rounds of golf. He also enjoyed horse racing and was a railroad enthusiast. Gene leaves a legacy of love that will continue with his family, friends and all who knew him.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2025 at Casey Methodist Church with Pastor Jeremy Harminson officiating. Burial will follow in the Casey Cumberland Cemetery, Casey, IL. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday prior to the service at Casey Methodist Church, 703 N. Central Ave., Casey, IL.
