Gerald Leon Black's Obituary
Gerald Leon Black, 80, of Casey, IL passed away at 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at his home in Casey, IL. He was born April 6, 1931 in Charleston, IL, the son of Ivan Kenneth Black and Bessie Maud Phillips Black. On December 23, 1950, he married Peggy Johnson in Casey, IL. Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Peggy Black of Casey, IL; son, Mike Black and wife Teresa of Casey, IL; son, Steve Black of Lakeland, FL; grandchildren, Josh Black of Champaign, IL; Heather Black of Champaign, IL and boyfriend, Jeremy Von Lanken of Villa Grove, IL; great granddaughter, Lexie Black of Casey, IL; and sister, Coralie Brandenburg of Mattoon, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leslie Black and Lowell Dean Black; brother in law, Stanley Brandenburg and sister in law, Doris Williams Black. Gerald was a 1948 graduate of Casey High School. He retired from Shell Oil Company in 1971. He and Peggy then built and operated the Casey KOA Campground for over twenty years. He later worked at Martin's IGA and helped several area farmers. Gerald was a member and deacon of the Macedonia Baptist Church. He spent numerous hours helping to rebuild the new church after the fire. Gerald enjoyed following his grandchildren and great granddaughter's activities. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Markwell Funeral Home with officiating with Rev. Marvin Oakley and Rev. Tom Marsh officiating. Burial will be in the Casey Cumberland Cemetery, Casey, IL. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Markwell Funeral Home, 200 N. Central Ave., Casey, IL. Memorial donations may be made to Macedonia Baptist Church, P.O. Box 55, Casey, IL 62420. Memorial tributes may be sent to the family at www.markwellfuneralhome.com.
