George P. Shaffner, age 56, of Findlay, OH formerly of Martinsville, IL died at 10:55 pm on Monday, January 18, 2016 at Birchaven Care Center in Findlay, OH. He was born on May 9, 1959 to Jack T. and Mary (Doyle) Shaffner of Martinsville, Illinois. On February 20, 1982, he married Carole A. Comer; she resides in Findlay, OH. George is survived by his parents, wife, two sons, George Benjamin (Steph) Shaffner of Minneapolis, MN and Kaleb Patrick Shaffner of Findlay, OH; two daughters, Alana (Myrick) Dennis of Cleveland, OH and Samantha Shaffner of Columbus, OH; two grandchildren: Clara Dennis and Nehemyah Dennis; two sisters, Susanne (Ed) Wheeler of Terre Haute, IN and Sally (Scott) Shawver of Casey, IL; mother-in-law, Sue Comer of Casey, IL and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. George was the Senior Vice President of Health, Environment, Safety and Security of Marathon Petroleum Corporation. He joined Marathon in 1981 as an associate engineer. He has held a number of engineering and managerial positions in the company's pipeline, marketing and refining operations, including as maintenance manager of the Detroit refinery from 1990 until 1992. He was named engineering manager at the Garyville refinery in 1992 and refining reliability and process safety manager in 1994. He was appointed division manager of the company's former St. Paul refinery in 2003 and the Detroit refinery in 2006. He was named senior vice president, Transportation and Logistics in 2011 and assumed his current position in 2015. George was a 1977 graduate of Martinsville High School and graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1981. He completed the Wharton School Advanced Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania in 2007. He was a member of Gateway Church, Findlay, OH and always loved owning and racing Corvettes. He was an avid sportsman; he especially enjoyed duck and elk hunting. Visitation for George will be held at Gateway Church on Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 12:00 to 4:00pm. Funeral services will be held at the conclusion of the visitation at 4 pm on Thursday at the church. Pastor Ben Borsay will officiate. Local visitation will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 1-3 pm at Casey United Methodist Church, 703 N. Route 49, Casey, IL with funeral services at the conclusion of the visitation at 3 pm on Saturday. The Rev. Dr. Penelope H. Barber will officiate.
