Dorothy M Kaufmann's Obituary
Dorothy M. Kaufmann, 84, of Casey, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Casey Health Care Center in Casey. Per her wish, cremation is scheduled. Markwell and Son Funeral Home in Casey is assisting the family with arrangements. Dorothy was born August 15, 1924, in Jamestown, North Dakota, the daughter of Fulton Ira and Dorothy Laura Ingle Kaufmann. She lived in Minneapolis, MN until 1931 when the family moved to Casey. She was a graduate of Casey Township High School and received her bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She received her master's degree in Library Science from Rosary College in River Forest, IL. Dorothy taught school in Morenci, AZ, San Bernadino, CA, Saginaw, MI and Waukegan, IL. She studied for her master's degree in Strasburg, Austria and established the library/media center at the newly-constructed Jack Benny Junior High School in Waukegan. She was a librarian in the Lake Forest, IL school system before returning to Casey in 1966, where she served as the librarian for all Casey schools, including the high school, Roosevelt, Monroe, and Hazel Dell schools until a state mandate required separate librarians for elementary and high schools. At this time she chose the elementary librarian position which she held until her retirement. She was an avid reader and a lifetime learner. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, word games and playing cards. Survivors include nieces, Sandi Ramsay and husband Jean of Casey, and Dottie Davito and husband Jim of Urbana; a nephew, Harry Kaufmann of Carmel Valley, CA; several cousins, 16 great-nieces and nephews, 27 great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harry and John Kaufmann; a sister, Jane; a nephew, Jim Kaufmann; nieces, Joanne Neece and Donna Huey; a great-nephew, and a great-niece. In Dorothy's memory, the family requests a book be read to a child. Memorials may be made in her honor directly to Casey Township Library or in care of Markwell and Son Funeral Home.
