Donald P McFarling's Obituary
Donald P. McFarling, died at home February 26, 2011 due to complications from Parkinson's Disease. Born in Clark County, Illinois in 1922, Don was the youngest child of Leonard I. McFarling and Ora Dell Partlow McFarling and had eleven older brothers and sisters. Don enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1940 and served in the Pacific as a radio operator during WWII. Upon completion of his service, he returned home and married Esther Malinda (Linda) Ulrey of Casey, Illinois, in 1946. Along with his brothers John, James and Robert, he founded McFarling Brothers, a food service distribution company in 1948. Indianapolis based McFarling Brothers grew into a very successful corporation and was eventually re-named McFarling Foods, Inc. Don was the President and CEO of McFarling Foods until his retirement, which he did not take until he was well into his eighties. Through the success of McFarling Foods, Don and his brothers and sisters were able to donate generously to many charities in the Indianapolis area, and gave a great deal of assistance to the Gleaners Food Bank of Indianapolis. Don was an avid sportsman and enjoyed tennis and basketball, and fishing trips to Canada which he always enjoyed in the company of his brothers and sisters and other family members. After the war, Don built a Ham radio station in his basement and communicated with other operators around the world. Following the death of wife Linda, Don married Lillian (Betty) Marburger whom he was married to until his passing. Don is survived by his wife Betty, and five sons and daughters from his first marriage; Leonard I. McFarling (Carla), Marta McFarling, Charles McFarling (Leslie), Julie McFarling Wise (William) and Bonnie McFarling. Four step-children, John Marburger (Rosemary), Paul Marburger (Pam), David Marburger (Angie) and Lisa Stansfield (Rob), several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Brother Bob McFarling (Grace), nieces and nephews. Don was cremated and a gravesite internment ceremony will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Washington Street Cemetery, Casey, IL.
