Benjamin Lawrence Bertram's Obituary
Benjamin Lawrence Bertram passed away August 11, 2019 at the Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville, IL Ben was born June 30, 1921 in Sheridan, WY the son of Ryan and Ruby Bertram. They moved to Casey in 1925 to take over Bertrams Newstand. Survivors include his daughter, Brenda (Richard) of Burnsville, NC, grandson Jeffrey (Kiersten) Kuhn of O"™Fallon, MO, granddaughter, Christa (David) Guilbeault of Glen Carbon, IL, great grandchildren, Austin, Jacob and Rylan Kuhn, Mariah, Taylor and Brandon Guilbeault, several nieces, nephews and many friends. Ben was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, son David, brother Bill, sister Ruby and his parents Ryan and Ruby. Ben worked at the Newstand with his brother Bill all through school. The brothers also ran the concession stand at the Casey Park during the summer to help put their sister Ruby through Nurses School. Ben lived in Casey the majority of his life; he married Betty after the War. He was a devoted family man enjoying their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a World War II Veteran, member of the Casey VFW, a Shriner, Rotary Club, the Casey United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church of Boynton Beach, FL When Ben returned from the War he & Betty purchased the Rex Café. He was an Owner/Manager of the Casey Bowl, Insurance sales, car salesman for Shanks Motors in Terre Haute and at Moody Elliott Ford in Casey. Ben loved fishing, golfing and bowling. Watching the Casey Girls Softball teams, was a Cubs fan until he moved to the St. Louis area! He was an avid cook and enjoyed cooking for events at the Casey Country Club, the VFW, the Sportsman"™s Club or neighborhood get togethers. He and Betty even traveled to Waterloo, IL to cook for an Italian Night at John and Karen Pottoff"™s establishment. Ben and Betty retired to Boynton Beach, FL in 1990 to enjoy golfing, fishing and the warm weather. Ben played golf almost daily, rode his bike and did a lot of walking. In 2010 he moved to the Edwardsville area due to health issues and lived at the Cambridge House over nine years. He attended their church services every Sunday morning.
