Stanley Lee Atkins, age 81, of Martinsville, IL passed away at 5:11 p.m. on Monday, December 9, 2019 at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, IN. He was born May 3, 1938 in Martinsville, IL the son of Darrell Lee Atkins and Mary Lucille Hardway Atkins. On August 15, 1981 he married Sandra Jean Porterfield in Ft. Bragg, NC.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Sandy Atkins, of Martinsville, IL; son, Jeffrey Atkins (Rhonda) of N. Aurora, IL; daughter, Tracy Ann Poindexter of Casey, IL; daughter, Rebecca Gelinas (Rob) of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Haley, Sydney and Mason Atkins; Jami Piehl and Jarred Poindexter. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Shirley Jane Cummins.
Stanley was a 1956 graduate of Martinsville High School. He continued his education for a year at Eastern Illinois University and worked as a pipeline welder for 5 years before being drafted into the US Army in 1961. He served his country during the Vietnam War in Special Forces as a Green Beret, Paratrooper and Chief Warrant Officer; he was stationed in the Philippines, Japan and Korea. Stanley’s career spanned twenty years when he retired from military service in 1981. He continued his education after retirement at Lake Land College and farmed in the Martinsville area. Stanley was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 13, 2019 at Greenwell Funeral Home with Rev. David Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Martinsville, IL with graveside military rites by Martinsville American Legion and Casey VFW. Visitation will be held from 4 – 7 p.m. on Thursday evening at Greenwell Funeral Home, 30 N. Washington St., Martinsville, IL.
