Norma Lee Paul Fain, age 87, of Casey, IL was born on October 3, 1933 to Bessie Hires Paul and Mike Paul in Greenup Township of Cumberland County, IL. As a genealogist she would appreciate all that detail. On December 10, 1949 she married Don Fain at the preacher’s house in Toledo, IL. For better or worse they had 67 years together until Don passed in July 22, 2017. Norma passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Casey Healthcare Center in Casey, IL. She always had a twinkle in her eye an ornery smile and gave the best hugs on earth. She will be sorely missed.
Norma had a very strong faith in God and worshiped at the White Oak Church for many years as well as the Friendship Church just down the road from home.
Her faith and upbringing made her a very strong woman. She was a school cook and worked second shift at Underwood, but that was just her paying jobs. She was a farmer’s wife who could do anything she set her mind to. She made cakes, cut hair, grew a garden, put up food, made clothes and cooked the best meals ever. Norma used her love of genealogy to work as the family historian, sort of a keeper of the book of Fain if you will…and Paul…and Hires…and well, you get the idea. She could nurse your plant back to health, hem your pants, diagnose your ills and keep your kids in line. She didn’t know a stranger, always had a house full and remembered the names of everyone she met until dementia stole her memory.
But her great love was her family. She is remembered here on earth by her siblings, Eddie Paul (Marilee), David Paul (Carol Padrick); her children, Ron Fain (Nila), Stan Fain (Terri Hock) and Brenda Hammond (Brian); son-in-law Richard Hippler (Betty); grandchildren, Amy Mullen, Sarah Tomes (Jeremy), Seth Fain (Erin), Jenny Oakley (Travis), Jessica Henderson (Josh), Keith Hammond (Casandra), Kayla Robinson (Jordan), Lucas Fain (Morgan Thomas), Karley Fain (Shawn Shellenbarger), Katie Fain, Leslie Richardson (Levi) and Nick Fain; step-grandchildren, Tara Perillo, Braden Schultz and Kelly Blanchard; great grandchildren, Cody Brown (Melissa), Derick Brown (Kyndra), Parker Fain, Grady Fain, Cord Fain, Garrett Oakley, Arden Oakley, Imogen Robinson, Rosalie Robinson, Jesse Fain, Kaylen Seibert, Silas Dean, Ian Richardson, Eli Richardson, Briar Henderson, Kayson Henderson, Cara Hammond and Cayden Woodrum; step-great grandchildren, Bailey Perillo, Wyatt Perillo, Jade Gray and Bodhi Gray; great great grandchildren Richard Brown, Haylee Brown, Connor Brown and Kayleigh Brown. “Aunt Toad” will also be missed by many nieces and nephews as well as cousins and friends.
Toad was a nickname given to her by her father when she was very young hopping over cow patties in the pasture. He called her his little hoppy toad and “Toad” stuck.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; her siblings, Oscar Paul, Walter Paul, Bill Paul and his wife Dolly and Linda Tincher; children, Jon Fain, Donna Hippler and Larry Fain; and one grandchild, Jacob Fain.
Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at the Washington Street Cemetery, Casey, IL with Rev. Tom Toner officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
