John Herschel Lewis, age 99, of Sherman, IL formerly of Springfield, IL and Naples, FL passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at The Villas Senior Care Community in Sherman, IL. He was born June 19, 1921 in Westfield, IL the son of Odie Hampsterd Lewis and Vivian Nevada Parker Lewis. On December 23, 1948 he married Elizabeth G. Hames in Morgantown, Kentucky.
Survivors include his wife of seventy-two years, Elizabeth “Tish” Lewis of Sherman, IL; children, Mark Lewis (Pam) of Normal, IL; Scott Lewis (Vickie) of Springfield, IL; Steven Lewis (Beth) of Palos Heights, IL and Elizabeth Ann “Libby” Olp (Ken) of Wheaton, IL; sister, Marian Reat of St. Charles, IL; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and half-brother, Carl Sandy.
John was a 1939 graduate of Westfield High School. After high school he proudly served his country in the US Marine Corp during WWII. He later obtained his Bachelor’s degree at Eastern Illinois University and Master’s degree at University of New Mexico. John retired as a teacher and coach after working in Grayville and Oak Lawn schools and Eastern Illinois University.
Private family funeral services will be conducted at Markwell Funeral Home with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery, Westfield, IL.
