Denzel Ruth (Davis) Richardson

Denzel Ruth Richardson, age 101, of Casey, IL passed away at 6:05 a.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021, at Heartland Nursing and Rehabilitation in Casey, IL. She was born July 6, 1920 in Westfield, IL the daughter of Edward Oscar “Pete” Davis and Ruth Mariah Lacey Davis. On May 25, 1945 she married John Richardson in Charleston, IL; he passed away on February 28, 1970. During WWII John and Denzel, “Dovie” as John affectionately called her corresponded by mail until his return.

Survivors include her sons, Edward “Ed” Richardson (Joyce) of Casey, IL, John Richardson of Ashmore, IL, James “Jim” Richardson (Sherry) of Charleston, IL, William “Bill” Richardson (Susie) of Charleston, IL and Richard “Rick” Richardson (Robin) of Rantoul, IL; sisters, Kay Smith (Larry) of Casey, IL and Roberta Boyer of Casey, IL; brother, Rex Davis (Elaine) of Fairmont, IL; sister in law, Naomi Davis of Casey, IL; 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren, many nephews and nieces and her nursing home family including staff and residents. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John Richardson Jr.; brothers, Edward Paul Davis, Charles Davis, Clayton Davis (Emma Jean), Dayne Davis (Betty), Perry Davis, Dale Davis (Mary) and Art Davis (Wiletha); sister, Mary Ratts (Don) and daughter in law, Susan Richardson.

Denzel was a graduate of Westfield High School; she was the last living classmate of her class. She worked as a Clerk in Perry’s Hardware Store and Hick’s Hardware Store in Casey, IL. She also provided home care to several families in the surrounding communities. Denzel was also a member of the Casey First Baptist Church in Casey, IL. She was a member of the local Ladies Aid where she made many friends. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, playing cards with friends and was a wonderful cook. Her specialties included her beef and noodles, meatloaf and her “sweets” were a favorite of everyone!

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26, 2021at Markwell Funeral Home with Pastor Gene Ellis, Pastor Tom Marsh and Pastor Jon McDonald officiating. Burial will follow in the Casey Cumberland Cemetery in Casey, IL. Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. prior to the service at Markwell Funeral Home, 200 N. Central Ave., Casey, IL. (Per CDC guidelines, face coverings are required regardless of vaccination status.  Please also maintain social distancing.)
