David Brent Hickox Obituary

David Brent Hickox, age 73, of Casey, IL formerly of New York City, NY passed away at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 in Casey, IL.  He was born on August 2, 1950 in Terre Haute, IN to Fred Eugene Hickox and Frances Louise (Barthelemy) Hickox.

David is survived by his siblings, Larry Hickox (Cindy) of Ft. Myers, FL and Cyndy Hickox (Jacqueline Morgan) of Yankton, SD; sister-in-law, Cheryl Hickox of Mattoon, IL; seven nephews and nieces, many great nephews and nieces, his Church family and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert “Bob” Hickox; sister, Patricia “Pat” Hickox; his partner, Scott Reeves and his beloved dogs Tucker and Ross.

David was a 1968 graduate of Casey High School and a 1972 graduate of Eastern Illinois University.  The summer following his college graduation, David toured Europe with the EIU chorus.

He spent the next two years teaching chorus and directing musicals at Casey High School. While at Casey, David won a singing award from the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and directed one of the largest plays of Casey High School history, “My Fair Lady” in the Casey High School gymnasium.

Upon his decision to leave Casey and move to Chicago, he sang at the Lyric Opera and with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  He toured with a National Tour group for a year and a half in the show “They’re Playing Our Song.”  They were in San Francisco for six months then on to Washington D.C., Boston, and Detroit.

David eventually moved to New York where he sang opera with the orchestra at Carnegie Hall.  He sang with such notables as Montserrat Caballe.

While living in New York, he purchased a house in upstate New York with a south-facing garden. It was an old canal house and he enjoyed the experience of renovating the beautiful historical home.

Prior to retirement David was a voice coach and a successful realtor, selling homes and apartments in the city.  He was a member of the Casey First Christian Church having joined in 1961.

David traveled back and forth from NYC to Casey when his mother’s health began to fail.  He made Casey his permanent home after she passed.
