August 28, 1936 ~ February 24, 2022 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Cherry Maxey Obituary

Cherry Viola Maxey, age 85, of Casey, IL passed away at 11 p.m. on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Heartland Nursing Center, Casey, IL.  She was born August 28, 1936, the second daughter of Noah Albert Brackett and Ruby Fern Tate Brackett, south of Dundas in Richland County, IL.  On March 22, 1955 she married her high school sweetheart, Jack Dean Maxey at the Dundas Baptist Church in Dundas, IL; they were married sixty years when Jack passed away on October 27, 2015.

Survivors include her daughters, Julia Tomlinson (Randy) of Olney, IL and Gail Lorton (Jerry) of Casey, IL; granddaughters, Mackenzie Denton (Ryan), Leslie Atkins (Benny), Tera Jo Scales (Matt), Tausha Sue Green (Christopher), Tory Lynn Keefer (Kyle),  Brooke Cramer (Jeremy) and Bailey Lorton;  great grandchildren, Hadley Tulane Denton, Drey Denton, Dezi Denton, Evan Joy Denton, Abram Slankard, Meah Elizabeth Scales, Wyatt Scales, Jesse Fritts, Logan Green, Forrest Green, Ivy Green, Lainie Isabel Keefer, Kimber Rose Keefer, Brody Jack Cramer, Leighton Cramer and Audrina Cramer; sisters, Olive Worman (Leroy) of The Villages, FL and Jo Fritschle of Olney, IL; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son, Bruce Dean Maxey and sisters, Susan Chenault and Tanya Kim Brackett.

Cherry attended West Liberty Grade School for eight years and graduated, with honors, from Newton High School, Jasper County, IL in 1954.  While in high school she was a member of the girls chorus, mixed chorus, and played the clarinet in the marching band and concert band all four years of high school.  She also sang with the OCC chorus.  As a child she sang with her father and sisters and played the marimba and accordion.  Upon graduation she was hired by Houston & Associates, CPAs (later to be named Larsson, Woodyard, and Henson) in Olney, IL.  She was employed there for twenty years until the company moved her to the Casey Office where she worked another thirty-four years, retiring in 2008.  Cherry was a Christian and was a faithful member of the Casey First Baptist Church where she served in the choir, as pianist and organist, Sunday School teacher and church Treasurer.  She loved her family dearly and loved spending time with her grandchildren, her seven angels and her sixteen great grandchildren. 

Graveside memorial services and inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at the Honey Cemetery, rural Newton, IL with Rev. Jon McDonald, Rev. Gene Ellis and Rev. Tom Marsh officiating.
